FETISHISM, PSYCHOANALYSIS, ANTHROPOLOGY

PATRICIA MORRIS

In psychoanalysis the term “fetishism” is tied to the sexually perverse. In Marxist theory it is tied to alienation. In anthropology it is tied to superstition. They share one common factor: the fetish refers to an over-valued material object.

But each pursuit often uses “fetishism” as if it were unproblematic, an interdisciplinary synonym. The word is bandied about so freely that it has lost its sharp edges, become a frayed homonym.

In Fetishism, Psychoanalysis, Anthropology the author examines some knotty areas that need unravelling.
